Set in the real world of the Spanish civil war and that of a fantasy underworld, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) survives twisted nightmarish evils in a film that is nevertheless transcendent, passionate and full of beauty. Ofelia, with her pregnant mother, journey to meet her ruthless military fascist stepfather (Sergei Lopez), whose communist infiltrated household is mirrored in the mystic labyrinth in which Ofelia finds herself in the company of the mysterious fawn Pan. The director’s visual flair virtually renders the sub-titles superfluous. |
